n. n. n. notorious

yesterday and i had two moments on my daily cityrail homeward journey. both touching me enough to remember them here.

firstly i bumped into a friend from university, video store guy. vsg was having what appeared to be a very bad day, but the 4 short stops we both had there was no time to explain. still managed to discuss the merits on my decision not to do a PHD and the need for vsg to do one.

vsg: "your decision not to do a Phd was very brave..."
nicoass: "well, some part of me knew doing a Phd was my safe option... and i think i could have done it, but it kinda felt like i was doing it to aviod the 'real world' if you know what i mean..."
vsg: "yeah"
nicoass: "well. i guess i knew in my heart i'd be doing a Phd because it was safe, it was a easy path... and because i didn't think i could get a job"
vsg: "even though you know otherwise now. yeh, i'm going to do a Phd"
nicoass: "where at?"
vgs: "Western Sydney, they allow you to do a novel for your Phd"
nicoass: "cool. yeah I feel like my challange was to try to move away from uni. you have been working since you got back from europe but man, you cannot fight your destiny. doing a Phd in creative writing is you. this is your challange. this work this is too safe."
vsg: "thanks your right"

you know, it's lucky vsg agreed cause that was a pretty opinionated thing i said. but i've never been one to have shallow-hal conversations. it was strange for someone to say they were proud of me to have NOT done a Phd... but you know what, as much as i joked with him that if I could get offered a APA scholorship anyone could get one, i took his comment seriously. for once, dare i say it, i agree i did something i'm proud of. i took the not so safe option.

i dashed off at central with promises to stay in contact and jumped on my train home. some lady was talking on the phone next to me and suddenly i heard tears.

"i don't know... i just asked him if he was ok. then he said 'i don't know' and hung up on me"

and then she really started to cry. one of those great moments on public transport when everyone just looks at there paper, book or shoes just that little bit harder. what can you do? offer to help... but how are you going to help. maybe the point is just asking if you can is helpful in the first place. then again, that person could just as easily get offended and tell you to get bent. ah, social dissonance, the armor any city dweller wears with pride.

and on to pussy matters. as promised, late but better then never. let me introduce to you all (all 3 of you), hailing from the south side, born and raised in the ghettos of oatly... give it up for the one and only
